Cats, Dogs, etc.
May 9, 2008
Thank you to everyone who came to the Council Bluffs Animal
Shelter, 2821 South 15th Street last Saturday to help us celebrate
PET ADOPTATHON. We still have lots of animals – both cats and dogs who are
looking for “furever” homes and they keep pouring in the doors of our shelter!
Destimona is a very lady like 3-4-year-old Siamese who’s
already been spayed. Her front “fingernails” have been surgically removed so
she needs to be an “indoors” only cat. Destimona is all dressed up in a
beautiful suit of creamy tan with lovely lilac points. She has a lilac face
with bright blue eyes. The top of her head is covered in creamy tan and she has
lilac ears. Her back and sides are covered in creamy tan and she has a very
expressive lilac tail. Destimona has a creamy tan neck and chest and a darker
tan tummy. Lovely long lilac legs and feet get her where she wants to go.
Destimona was found in the 1100 block of Marshall Avenue.
Panache has been a resident at our shelter for several
weeks now and he uses all of his feline wiles to attract the attention of anyone
who comes anywhere near his kennel. Panache is a 2-year-old sweetie who’s
already been neutered. He’s all decked out in a short (“purrfect” for summer)
suit of white with tan tabby stripes. The lower half of his face is white –
with a cute little pink nose for accent – and the upper half is covered in a
“cowl” of tan tabby stripes that also covers his ears. Panache has a white back
and sides with a tan striped “ringed” tail. His neck, chest and tummy are
covered in soft white fur with legs and feet to match. He was brought to our
shelter as a stray from the 800 block of North 35th Street.
Lorenzo is a very distinctively marked cat. He’s a
6-7-year-old handsome dude who’s already been neutered and micro chipped.
Lorenzo has a black face with white cheeks and a white spot on the right side of
his nose and a white “comma” on the left side of his nose. Lorenzo has long
white whiskers on his cheeks and bright white whiskers above his bright yellow
eyes. His back, sides and tail are covered in shiny black fur and he has a
white neck, chest and tummy. Lorenzo’s legs and feet are white – with the
exception of his left front foot that is marked with a little black spot. He
was found wandering around on Stuart Blvd.
“Yowzer, Yowzer – I’m a Schnauzer!” That’s what Ruffers
seems to be saying to anyone who gets close enough to hear him! Ruffers is a
6-year-old fellow with an engaging “pawsonality.” He’s all decked out in a,
somewhat, shaggy looking
suit of salt and pepper. Ruffers has a multitude of
“whiskers” on his face and pretty brown eyes. His back, sides and little docked
tail are also covered in shaggy salt and pepper fur. Prancing shaggy salt and
pepper legs complete his ensemble. Ruffers was brought to our shelter by his
former “humans” who couldn’t take care of him any longer.
Guillermo really isn’t all ears – even though in his
picture he certainly looks like he is! He’s a cute little 1 ½-year-old Rat
Terrier in a super short suit of white, black and tan. Guillermo has a black
face with tan on the outside edges of his mouth and little tan eyebrows. He has
a white back, sides and tail with several patches of black and tan on his back
and sides. Guillermo has a white neck, chest and tummy with legs and feet to
match. He was found scampering around at the Sherwood Apartments. Rat Terriers
are high energy little dogs – but they’re totally devoted to their “people.”
Athletic Abby is a 7-month-old Border Collie mix who would
love to learn how to play “Frisbee” with you! This lovely specimen of a canine
is all suited up in her “uniform” of white, black and tan. Abby has a white
muzzle with black around the outside edges of her eyes and tan streaks on the
inside edges. A broad streak of white runs from her nose up and over the center
of her head. She has a white back, sides and tail with several splotches of
black on her back and sides. Abby’s neck, chest and tummy are covered in soft
white fur and she has “athletic” legs and feet to match. She was brought to our
shelter because her former neighbors complained that she barked too much. I
think she was just saying that she wanted someone to play with her!
UPDATE – We’ve had lots of inquiries regarding the two
little red Chihuahuas, Jackson and Sophie, who were featured in his column two
weeks in a row. Unfortunately, the little cuties didn’t get adopted – but they
were both placed with a rescue group and have settled in fine. Thanks for
caring!
HELP NEEDED! Kitten season has arrived at our shelter. As
the pregnant cats and the nursing mothers with kittens pour into our shelter, we
are in desperate need of “temp adopt” homes where these companion animals can be
loved and cared for until they are old enough to be adopted. Our “temp adopt”
program is very simple. SOLAS (Support Our Local Animal Shelter) will pay for
all of the medical care, food, litter and other essentials that a “temp adopt
parent” will need for the mother cat and kittens until the kittens are old
enough to be adopted. At that time, we will also pay to have the mother cat
spayed to help make her more adoptable. If you’re interested in helping these
new mothers and their offspring, please call SOLAS at 256-2287 for more
information.
RESCHEDULED – A fun time is in store on May 24th
for anyone who would like to participate in the sixth annual Eldon “Lee” Tackett
Poker Run – which will this year, once again, benefit Support Our Local Animal
Shelter. Mr. Tackett was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2002, and his last
wish was for his friends to hold a Poker Run each year and donate the proceeds
to charity. The signup for the event, in which all vehicles are welcome, is
from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Railway Inn, 115 South 12th Street.
Cost is $15 for one hand or $25 for two hands. Those unable to participate in
the Poker Run are welcome to join the party – including raffles – beginning at 6
p.m. at Deuces, 20270 Old Lincoln Highway. Music by Copper Blues Band is after
the run at 9 p.m. for more information, call Deena at (402) 319-3555.
Check out our website at solas.networku.net for all of our
upcoming events. You can also see photos of the animals available for adoption
at the shelter on our website or you can click on the link to petfinder.com.
Remember SOLAS is offering senior citizen coupons worth $40
off the cost of the spay/neuter of any cat or dog adopted from the Council
Bluffs Animal Shelter. These coupons will be available to anyone over age 55.
We hope that this will encourage more seniors to adopt companion animals from
our shelter. If you’re under 55, we have $25 coupons to help offset the cost of
spaying/neutering of any cat or dog adopted from our shelter.
SOLAS would like to extend a special thank you to all of
the families who have requested that memorials be given to SOLAS in memory of
their loved ones. These memorials have enabled us to help make the lives of the
animals that pass through the doors of our shelter a lot easier. We greatly
appreciate your thoughtfulness.
If you are interested in making a tax-deductible donation
to SOLAS to help us pay for vaccinations and medical care for the shelter
animals, please call us at 712-256-2287, email us at
solas@cox.net - or mail a donation to SOLAS, 1204 North 28th
Street, Council Bluffs, IA 51501-0751. All donations are very much
appreciated.
